Steam Bans - The Brand New Banning System. You Better Believe it! - Miscellaneous

SteamBans.com is a brand new service based on an old concept. Global ban lists have been active for years on the old WONID program from VALVe. When the change came to STEAMID it fell natural for us to develop a service specially minded to this new system. But we also wanted more.

The sometimes brainless acceptance of people's accusations and blind trust in anti-cheat detection tools seemed way too common in the "business". We wanted to create a service for admins that were interested in getting better at spotting and catching cheaters themselves. Fighting cheat developers and cheaters on their own terms (programming) were for us to hard a battle to go up head to head against (there are perfectly good tools available for that).

We wanted to focus on the cheater personally more then on the cheats he used. Our experience tells us that a cheater will eventually make mistakes and reveal his cheats, and we want admins ready to catch him when he does. This way we can base our catches on humans (server admins) and gain experience via them to develop better and more precise techniques for spotting cheats.

No system is perfect, and here at SteamBans we are not as ignorant as to claim that mistakes are never made. We do however think that we have rigid measures and countermeasures installed to diminish the chance of a false ban. Voting discussions, 3 admins needing to agree and the opportunity to call upon the skilled team of demo-consultants are some of the measures that allow us to be proactive and to diminish the chances of a false ban

For those who want a quick overview of this new Banning System. Check out the Steam Bans Profile. It will show exactly how to protect your server, how to submit a ban, and the Proof Requirements. Check it, it's really worth it!

1. 12 Year old Admins
2. The admin being present.

Other than, that, hope I don't loose all the money I put into my Steam account just because someone was whining that they got owned and took a joke serious.

nah, I'm sure they'd have to do a lot more than just be *****ed off to get you banned

I agree with #2. There had better be some very good evidence requirements in order to get someone on the ban list -- I've lost count of the times that I've been accused of hacking, ESPECIALLY in games like cs:s where most players consider three headshots in a row conclusive evidence of aimbot.

why dont you noobs like #2 read it
it says that you need a demo of the cheater cheating

# Proof Requirements:
There are new and stricter requirements for ban submissions

We are initiating a harder line towards proof gathering to stand better in case a ban is protested.

A SteamBans Protected Server
This server has to run SBSRV 2.6 or higher (HL1) or SBSRC 1.2 or higher (HL2)

To make a demo on these servers and pass the proof requirements simply type SB_STATUS in console while you record the demo.

# Start the demo and type "record [DEMONAME]" in console
# Type "sb_status"
# Record the needed proof, then type "stop"

I hate this stuff personally. I've been kicked a few times for "cheating", mind you I never actually win any games nor am I any good (yeah I admit it). I mean I am near the top but nothing special.

But they record demos of me and look at them and say I cheat because I stare at walls near doorways and corners and can kill people! No, its called I face the directions of the hallway so I can hear equal sound on both sides of my headphones. If I hear running on my left I know someone is approaching and I sidestep and and hopefully will kill them!

But most think I making that up even though most people with headphones use "sound" when behind a wall!

Assassin, as said above. If someone get's banned, it will be decided by 3 admins. Not 1.

I'm a little fuzzy on the whole three admin concept, since most admins i've seen will back each other up to the end if you insult one.

ive never used hacks/trainers or even minor SCRIPTS on any game in my life... and i am not that far above average skill at cs... yet ive been bannd twice sofar of the 6 yrs playing, which both times were by immature admins that were at both times playing against me, and at times i get my game on and own as most ppl possibly do, and both times i was falsely accused and bannd for life instantly... if i lose my steam account because of this futile program.... i am gonna get the hole thing shut down because ive never ever and will never hack in my life on a game because i enjoy to play with my own skill, not the skill of a program. i just feel unsafe with this new idea... that is all.

It's not a particularly new idea. Ban lists have been around quite a while.
