The story:
A last-second warning has just reached your outpost; You must man a Combine gunship and defend against a final push by the rebels to clear the sands near City 03. Reports indicate the rebels will be using small arms, anti-vehicle weapons, both handheld and vehicle based, and several attack helicopters captured during the fall of City 09. Your life is expendable. The outpost is not. We have advised the commander to flee, but are unsure whether there will be time to extract him. Dropships in the nearby vicinity will not be able to reach the outpost in time to assist. You are on your own; Do as ordered.

I made this because I like playing around with the physics and entity work of Hammer, but I'm not all that great at aesthetics. And so I make things like pilotable helicopters, and buy systems for hl2sp, and this gunship.

Piloting this beast is difficult, but possible with practice. Right click thrusts in whatever direction the ship is facing, _not_ the direction your view is facing. Look all the way up to align your view straight ahead. Forward pitches down, back pitches up, right turns right, left turns left. Hitting the ground makes it shake, but you can run into the walls to fix that. The blue glow is supposed to be there, its a damage indicator. Alright, there are a few bugs with this...While the damage display works generally, it likes to show zeros a lot, and doesn't always show damage correctly when below 10%
I threw the source map in too, since my brushwork isn't much and anyone can decompile my crap and see how the entities work, so...enjoy the source file.

This is amazing! It took me a while to get used to the controls but it's so fun!
A MUST DOWNLOAD! A question: How did you make your own gun fire can hurt and kill rebels???? PLEASE end the answer to andrew@ewilson.ca ! Thanks for making such a great map!

Im finding the craft to be quiet difficult to opperate with it getting stuck, however i found that the buggy with RPG launching driver to be very clever.

Excellent work. Many thanks for sharing the source. It truly does help the HL2 mapping community

Add an ai_relationship in the map.
Subject "!player"
Target "Whatever you named the citizens" (actually, you can switch
these around, it doesn't matter)
Disposition "Hate"
Priority "Doesn't matter"
Reciprocal "Yes"

If you want to get the illusion of a squad with combine, use an
ai_goal_follow and put the subject "!player" and the target "whatever
you named your combine".
Luckily, hammer supports wildcards (*) so you can name combine elites
combine_elite, police combine_police, stuff like that, and you only
need 1 ai_goal_follow, subject !player, target combine_*

Stuck as in how? I never managed to get the craft permanently stuck in all my testing, except for running it into the black openings in the base (try to avoid that, it sucks)
The apc's were surprisingly easy to use, but unfortunately when you blow one up it always spawns a broken combine apc model, instead of the jeep, so I had to do some makeshift hitbox stuff so that it killed the apc instead of breaking it.
I'm glad everyone likes it, I'll create a prefab sort of map eventually so you can just copy and paste the gunship into your own map. I always release the source files, as there's no point keeping an entity system to yourself. There's always the hope of a really awesome aesthetic mapper picking it up and playing around with it, too.
Anything that adds to the sp-aholic's experience is good.

I would get the gunship stuck on the ground if I touched it and would have to get out and get back in to get it moving again. No big deal.

Why couldn't it be rebels piloting the helicopter? That would be much more fun.
