FakeFactory: Cinematic Mod 8 - Part 1 / 5 (Final) - Readme
Readme File:
--------------------------------------------------------
FAKEFACTORY CINEMATIC MOD V8 ORANGEBOX
Build 8.0 final

for Half-Life 2 / Half-Life 2: Episode One / Half-Life 2: Episode Two
--------------------------------------------------------

THIS VERSION BRINGS THE ORANGEBOX ENGINE TO OLD HL2 AND EP1.
IT INSTALLS INDEPENDENT FROM CM7 OR OLDER VERSIONS

TO PLAY THIS MOD, YOU MUST OWN HALF-LIFE 2 / EPISODE ONE / EPISODE TWO FULLY
INSTALLED AND UNLOCKED! (= started at least once) YOU CANNOT PLAY THIS MOD WITHOUT EPISODE TWO CONTENT!

LET ME WARN YOU ABOUT THE RADICAL GRAPHICAL CHANGES:

This mod is my very personal interpretation of the HL2 protagonists.
It may give some replay-value to people, who are open-minded to a refreshing new look.
But it is not suitable for stubborn people.
You have been warned.

--------------------------------------------------------
Remember to activate "High Quality" model and graphic settings in the options dialog
or the facial animations aren't playing.
--------------------------------------------------------

PURPOSE OF THIS MOD:
-------------------------------------------------

- Raise the quite outdated graphical appearance to a state-of-the-art level
- Give the HL2 trilogy a more stressed, darker and minatory look
- Enhance the soundtrack with a semi-dynamic new hollywood-style music
- Replace the low-resolution textures with high resolution counterparts and more detailed environments (hires melones!)
- Complement the storyline with the unused content from the original games
- Refresh the look and feel with optional new HD models
- Add more replay-value
- Give stubborn people and the facepunch monkeys something to complain about

- Enhanced Alyx HD-model (Adriana Lima face)
- Enhanced Civilian HD-models (now its the time to give them a try)
- hacked all HL2 levels for Orangebox compatibility
- fixed all known texture errors
- fixed the "hopping mossman" bug in novaprospect
- tweaked the HDR/BLOOM effects on HL2 maps (less blooming)

HDR for HL2
-------------------------------------------------

Not all HL2 maps are true HDR, because not all sources are available. For all
other maps i used a technique, that i call "Entity injection". Technically i've
used clientcommand entities and tonemapcontrollers to achieve a hdr-like type of
blooming on those maps. This type of bloom is much more realistic than the old
bloom mini-mod, because the effect is controllable inside the map for different
settings at certain locations. You can call it HDR V0.5 or Bloom V2. Its some
kind of super-ehanced bloom that gives a near-HDR look on the old HL2 maps.
Some of the map-settings aren't final (i'm still at the fine-tuning phase)

CHARACTER PIMPER:
--------------------------------------------------

You can use the "Character Pimper" to switch between HD models and original VALVE models.

The Alyx HD-model was built from scratch, all other models are based on
massive modified POSER7 models and compiled with a rewritten studiocompiler,
that is allowing a much higher polycount than VALVE's original compiler. The
facial animations were build with 3DS MAX and exported with Cannonfodders
VTA -exporter.

USING OLD CM6.x Alyx Hires models in this version
--------------------------------------------------

The V8+ Alyx models are completely reworked with enhanced skeletton and facial
animations. The older CM6 models are not longer used. If you want the older
models from your CM6 installation, make a copy of the CM6-Characterpimper
"repository" folder and the CM6 "hl2materialsmodelsAdriana" folder before you
uninstall it.

After installation of CM8 is completed, you can copy the old content to the V8
directory, BUT DON'T OVERWRITE V8 FILES! I strongly recommend to use the new CM8
models. They are optimized for the Orangebox engine. I will release recompiled
V6 models as a update-patch in the near future.

SOUND DROPS OR CRACKLING:
-------------------------------------------------

If sound crackles occures, you can fix this by setting the snd_mixahead value in
the autoexec's of CM's subdirectories. You will find the autoexec.cfg in the

FAKEFACTORY_CM8hl2cfg
FAKEFACTORY_CM8episodiccfg
FAKEFACTORY_CM8ep2cfg

directories. Try different value like snd_mixahead "0.2" or snd_mixahead "0.4"
for increasing the buffered time of soundsamples. This will fix crackling or
dropouts, but can lead to slightly asynchronous or delayed sounds.

MICROSTUTTER AND HEAPSIZE
--------------------------------------------------

If you encounter microstuttering ingame (animations), try the heapsize command.
Add -heapsize {bytes} to the shortcuts, i.e.:

Shortcut: Cinematic Mod EP2
Target: ....launcher.exe" -heapsize 512000.

But NEVER set the heapsize above [YOUR INSTALLE RAM / 3] or 512MB

SETUP.EXE AND VIRUS-WARNING
--------------------------------------------------

Setup uses a tool called SetACL for setting write permissions to the mods
screenshots / cfg / SAVE directories. Some antivirus software could warn about
possible malware. This is a false positive.

TECHNICAL INFO:
--------------------------------------------------

This mod's binaries are modified for memory allocation beyond 2 GB. To
prevent STEAM from overwriting this binaries with its own copies on each start,
the mod ist using a little launcher, that reroutes STEAM's original binaries
to >NIL.

Start this mod only with the shortcuts in your start menu (that were
created during installation)!

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:

- DX9 capable graphics hardware with minimum 256 MB VRAM. (512 MB recommended)
- 3 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:

- Fully installed STEAM Client; You can't start the mod without STEAM running.
- Fully installed and unlocked HL2 / EP1 / EP2; Make shure, you have started those games in the past.

32 BIT WARNING:
--------------------------------------------------

This mod was developed and tested on 64 Bit Windows. It is NOT supported on
32 Bit Windows, because of the limited Userspace with 32 Bit systems. You
can try it on 32 Bit, but prepare for crashes.

On some 32 Bit systems it is possible to overcome this limitation with some
boot.ini switches for raising the userspace limit. I'm not going into
detail here, because those tweaks are dangerous and should only be done by
people, who are knowing exactly, what they do.

ADDENTUM FOR VERSION 7 and 8:

V7 and above of this mod uses much more Hires textures than the previous versions. This
means: The engine has to cache a peak-value of >2GB texturedata at runtime. It's
almost impossible to play this mod crash-free on 32 Bit systems without lowering
the graphics settings.

the engine support subsurface scattering. Or don't you need any support for that feature engine wise? Or did you even write the shader for it?

#2 - Posted by: pokemona (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 07:50
Fake could you possible post the Original sized images of those screenshots here? I want to see them at full quality.

Looks so solid on the pictures Rock

Will report back when installed and played a little.

 #6 - Holy Hell! - Posted by: Korolev61 (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 10:52
How do you get such good resolution for stuff like skin? Do you take something like 12 megapixel pictures of people and apply to the models or something? I can only imagine how you created the nude Alyx model!

#7 - Posted by: Mure (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 11:25
I FRIGGING LOVE YOU big grin

#8 - Posted by: Nahka (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 12:00
downloading now and this will take a looong time, about 2 days. are you going to make some alternative packs or something since this is the final version? oh, and have you thought about releasing the adult content?

 #9 - Freakin' sweet - Posted by: 2Cold_Scorpio (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 13:32
Great job, FakeFactory. I've been a fan since CM6, and each new version just looks better and better. Keep up the great work!

A question, however: is CM8 Final to be the last CM, or do you have a CM9 in mind? Just curious... In the meantime, I'm off to enjoy the goodness that is CM8. Cheers!

We won't allow that on hl2files.

 #11 - #10 Why not? - Posted by: Illuminati_0883 (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 15:53
He's had plenty of nude models in the past. Fake, can you host your CM packs on a different website where we can get new nude models? If not I'm out of business. I need more for my Gmod Alyx pack.

 #12 - Posted by: Skyrider (Half-Life 2 Files Staff) on 07-14-2008 at 16:01
illuninati, get your perverted things somewhere else. He had it in the past, yes. But not anymore.

 #13 - #12 - Posted by: Illuminati_0883 (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 17:41
"get your perverted things somewhere else" I know, that's what I'm trying to do.

#14 - Sorry for the double post. - Posted by: Illuminati_0883 (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 17:48
In Fake's CM 8.02b2 there was a nude model. So you're incorrect about him not doing it anymore. Besides, why the sudden change in rules? Tt wasn't too long ago that you guy's had the "Six new Alyx models" where one of the models was completely nude. There was a picture and everything.

 #15 - Torrent - Posted by: horizonbreakk (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 18:03
Freshly placed torrent: http://www.gameupdates.org/details.php?id=2709

 #16 - No 32-bit? - Posted by: Tequila007 (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 18:53
So this will not work with my standard Windows Home Edition? Or is there a work around? If it wont work what windows do i require for it, Vista or 64-bit XP?

 #17 - Posted by: mystery_editor (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 19:04
Tequila007: It will *work* on 32-bit, but its not really designed for it.

I'm running v8 Beta2 alright, but I'm sure it would run a whole lot better if i was on 64-bit. XP of Vista 64 would work :3

 #18 - Posted by: justaclone2 (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 19:24
What's the total size once extracted and installed?

I've mentioned before that I probably won't be playing it, but I'm just curious.

#19 - FILE CORRUPTED - Posted by: themanclaw (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 21:24
My winRAR says CM part 1 is corrupted- I tried downloading multiple times. Doesn't Work.

#20 - Posted by: Submat (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 23:04
This will work stable on 32 bit with medium textures, atleast it does for me. Also, there's a bug I have on my 32bit: alyx's skin is black (atleast in ep2), I can see her skin but it is black. Not afro-american, but perfect black like coal. I'm certain I have a powerful enough computer, and that this is a bug caused by either: a) 32 bit vista ram restriction or b) a bug in the mod. Oh yeah, and this mod didn't install on steam successfully - I can't see it in games list but I can play it without steam (shift tab still works though).

I was unaware of that, and sudden changes? I've removed that file from hl2files like a year ago or so or more? So not really "sudden" changes. These rules has been like added like a long long time ago.

 #22 - #21 - Posted by: Illuminati_0883 (Member) on 07-14-2008 at 23:57
There have been more recent nude models, like my model pack.

I thought that azzkiker removed those nude models within that model pack.

#24 - Posted by: BigPalooka (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 02:00
Added Subsurface scattering for realistic skin reflections

YESSS

Illuminati_0883 links not works and is that update from you new ?

 #26 - @illuminati_0883 - Posted by: Nahka (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 06:33
I think saying that your Alyx model packs include nude models was a mistake, those files are gone now

#27 - Oh WOW! - Posted by: lowtech (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 07:34
After 24 hours of downloading... v8 looks Fantastic! The new jigglebone adds a whole new level to the game. Alyx looks "real". Body/Hair movements are great! Dog looks better than ever and the new models are just amazing.

Thank .You. Fake!!

At horizonbreakk:
NICE torrent! Beats the crap out of FileFront speed, thanks so much!
I can actually download and play in the same day big grin

 #29 - @Mure - Posted by: horizonbreakk (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 07:57
No problem, hopefully by tonight seeders should increase, so speeds should be even better.

Also for anyone else using the torrent, I have posted one on the piratebay: *removed*

Between gameupdates(dot)org's core seeding and piratebays popularity one might have more seeeders than the other, so check both. anyways enjoysmile

 #30 - Posted by: Skyrider (Half-Life 2 Files Staff) on 07-15-2008 at 08:20
Sorry, no PB links. That site contains illegal files as well.

 #31 - @skyrider - Posted by: horizonbreakk (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 08:23
Oooops. sorry. I can still remove the torrent from pb if you want.

 #32 - Posted by: Skyrider (Half-Life 2 Files Staff) on 07-15-2008 at 09:23
That is up to you smile, just don't link it here on hl2files.

I see you still can't handle criticism, you *****.

#34 - Must Download - Posted by: FreemanLockedUp (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 09:54
Yes, thank you Fake.
I'm Downloading now. Oh, how I wish I had TBit Superband.

#35 - PLEASE help Fakefactory - Posted by: andreshoi (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 12:03
my pc is fast enough only it runs xp 32 bit, So I no that the game sometimes crash, but With half-life1 I start a new game and when it is finisht with loading I get a Error:
Failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDx8::LockVertexBuffer.

Can you please help me with this problem because I love your Mod.

 #36 - #26 - Posted by: Illuminati_0883 (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 12:05
"I think saying that your Alyx model packs include nude models was a mistake, those files are gone now"

I knew he was going to remove them. It's fine, no one was downloaded them anyways. I though more people where going to download it from the start, wrong crowd I guess? I'm going to upload my model pack with even more models some where. I'll post a link to a forum with the model pack once I'm done.

#37 - Torrent Update - Posted by: horizonbreakk (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 12:36
Due to a faulty modem, the torrent has stopped seeding. As soon as I have fixed the problem, seeding will resume. Sorry for the inconvenience.

 #38 - Posted by: Skyrider (Half-Life 2 Files Staff) on 07-15-2008 at 14:39
Illuminati_0883, I never removed it. I just disabled them for now. I might add it as FoTW (File of the week) or in the Featured files. Once the nude models has been removed that is. Plus, I hope not to see any links to any model pack or files that includes nude files.

 #39 - Corrupted... - Posted by: Kill_Joy (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 15:22
Any news yet on the corrupted file issue?

 #40 - Music - Posted by: Cradossk (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 16:07
Would it be possible to just release your musical interpretation of Half-Life 2, Episode I, and Episode II? If so, that would be amazing.

 #41 - Same as #35 - Posted by: MajLeeWasted (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 16:28
Yeah i got the same prob as #35, this happens anytime i try to load the game.
this is the error:

Failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDx8::LockVertexBuffer.

Please help, i LOVE this mod and hate to see it crash frown
System Specs
(in case u need them)
intel pentium 4 proccesor 3.40 GHz
3 GB of RAM
and my graphics card is a Radeon HD 4870 (it's totaly kick a**)

 #42 - #38 - Posted by: Illuminati_0883 (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 16:32
Not even if I link them to a separate forum? Then how are they supposed to actually know about it then? PM me one at a time? File of the Week does sound tempting but the nude models are as much apart of the model pack as they are of FakeFactory. It would be a crime not to include them in the pack.

 #43 - Posted by: justaclone2 (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 17:51
Forget it, I'm downloading it.

 #44 - Posted by: Skyrider (Half-Life 2 Files Staff) on 07-15-2008 at 18:22
Illuminati, I'll host it on hl2files as long it doesn't include any nude models.

#45 - Posted by: FreemanLockedUp (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 20:48
AAAARRRRGGGG - Ran out of disk space while Unzipping.

Oh well, just have to use the other Raid array. Just a pity it's taking so long to extract, but it will be worth the wait.

By the way Fake;
I see you've not bothered with the usual installer for this release. Was that so people could just drag and drop over the existing beta folders?

#46 - Posted by: FreemanLockedUp (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 20:59
My Error - hadn't extracted it.

 #47 - @FPSDars - Posted by: BigPalooka (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 21:37
I can still see you're a whiny ******

 #48 - @ MajLeeWasted & andreshoi - Posted by: DjBase2006 (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 22:24
Upgrade to vista 64bit or xp 64 bit... It's because of the 32bit system you guys a using.
i was having the same error when i used a 32 bit windows back then.

#49 - First Play - Posted by: lowtech (Member) on 07-15-2008 at 22:55
I didn't have any file corruption on download. Filefront apparently only allows one download stream so download managers are only good to re-start a stopped download.
XPPro 32Bit
3.2GHz
3GB Ram
Radeon 1300
I can play everything on high (so far ) except the world textures frown
Still on HL2. So far no real issues and it looks Fantastic.
Well, "Jigglebone" Mossman shouldn't ride elevators... smile
v8 is definitely Two Thumbs Up! GREAT Job Fake!

It seems the mod can't run for me when I set it to Very High due to Alyx and some other textures (1 zombie) turn all black...which signals I ran out of memory or something. Console said something like D3D: OUT OF MEMORY! =/

256 Video Memory on my card btw lol.
I know its stupid to ask but is it my card or could there be something done to the mod?

Here's 2 screenshots (1 of alecks, and another of a zombeh)

Thats really odd. Even after blowing up your video-memory, the graphics driver should be able to swap currently unused textures back into main memory.

Update:

I can see the following effects on two laptops (both with 128 MB vram) with the scene you posted in the screenshots above:

Laptop 1: Framerate drops to bottom while memory swapping occurs (ATI), but textures are still displayed

Laptop 2: Black textures, like on your system (NVIDIA)

i'm currently not shure, if the problem is fixable with low-memory environments (CM8 needs up to 512 MB vram peaks on heavy scenes)

I guess it's the video card problem. I'm gonna do it again, see what happens.
I'll check back

How would i go about upgrading to XP 64-bit?confused

 #58 - @ MajLeeWasted - Posted by: DjBase2006 (Member) on 07-16-2008 at 09:41
What do you mean ?

I would recomend upgrading to vista 64bit, as xp 64 bit is going to die out with time.

#59 - Upgrading to Win 64bit - Pros and Cons - Posted by: FreemanLockedUp (Member) on 07-16-2008 at 09:46
While 64 bit is all well and good, there is still a lot of software out there that has real trouble with it, and yet surprisingly, it's modern games that suffer more and more.

At present, I'm using a recycled 1.8GHz Intel Dual Core, with a GeForce 7600, and running WinXP 32bit. Thats great for low end stuff that has real trouble with 64 bit.

For the 64bit rig - 3GHz AM2 Dual Core, with 4GB Ram, and a GeForce 8600 (although I tried to upgrade to a 9600 - the Mobo couldn't take it).

This is real handy for me, but if you really need 32bit for software that doesn't work on 64bit, then I'd advise sticking with it or building a fresh rig.

@ Fake:
I had no problems with installing, but during 'Route Kanal', I did have the game Freeze (might not like the motion blur), and also got a Crash and Error message when I tried again. 3rd time round, and no problems so far.

 #60 - @ FAEKFACKTORY 3 questions - Posted by: DjBase2006 (Member) on 07-16-2008 at 10:01
1. Why did you remove those scenes where Alyx did some things she diddn't do in the original episode 1 ? (where she sit down on the floor and all that)

2. I have noticed when you crawl in shafts there is no walk sound, a you aware of that ?

3. How much more will you do with your mod, any future plans ?

 #61 - Thanks, and a question - Posted by: pedro_666 (Member) on 07-16-2008 at 12:42
First of all, thanks for making this great mod. However, I noticed that when I start any half life 2 game, I no longer have the animated background. I am unsure whether or not you intended this, but I would like to know if/how it would be possible to get it back.

 #62 - A quick question: - Posted by: 2Cold_Scorpio (Member) on 07-16-2008 at 13:25
About the FOV setting (or is it POV; I can't remember)...what's a good setting to set this to on a 22" 16:10 monitor @ 1680x1050 resolution? Anyone who can answer this, I'd appreciate it.

#63 - QUICK FIX - Posted by: themanclaw (Member) on 07-16-2008 at 15:02
one of the VMT files is messed up- resulting in a missing normal map. You may have noticed it on the wall to your right immediately after you walk in the door to Nova Prospect.

download the fix here http://files.filefront.com/plasterwall034cvmt/;11092521;/fileinfo.html

and place the file in steamapps/sourcemods/fakefactory_CM8/hl2/materials/plaster

#65 - some bugs - Posted by: FreemanLockedUp (Member) on 07-16-2008 at 15:16
At the Start, when you begin your teleport trip via Breens office, Breen does not bother to get out of his chair, even when you drop in again when he's talking to the Advisor on the Monitor behind him.

Also when you are entering the Nova Prospect Teleport chamber, Alyx follows in, and then walks back out again to lock the door, before finally doing a Noclip through the closed door.

There also apears to be some choppy framerate during areas where lots of physics stuff is, such as for example the Zombie infested tunnels during Highway 17 / Sand Traps, or if you run circles around Alyx at Black Mesa East. This problem was not present during the beta's.

Other than this, the mods looking pritty cool so far. Will we see some more versions of Alyx, such as the reworked Push up Bra variant with a HD Valve head. I'm unsure if the V7 would work with the Jigglebone, and the V8 with the bush up bra looks just the right chest size.

Beer! Beer!

 #67 - Posted by: justaclone2 (Member) on 07-16-2008 at 15:29
Fake, I'm running on 32 bit, but I've never experienced this before on CM 7. I'm getting this black texture for a lot of surfaces throughout the trainstation. The upper portion of walls are black, a lot of the floor textures are black. And both the floor and walls of interrogation rooms at the trainstation are black.

Is it supposed to be like this?

 #70 - FAKEFACTORY(BLACK TEXTURE UPDATE) - Posted by: Zomb3h (Member) on 07-16-2008 at 20:09
Well it looks like after I turned Shadow to MEDIUM and turned off Motion Blur, Alyx as well as other textures (zombeh) aren't black anymore LOL (Though I don't know if turning those effects down had any effect.)

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/1087/ep2outland010002rs6.jpg
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/9228/ep2outland010003ku0.jpg

But then again, I'm getting some weird wall texture, like rainbowish coloring. Though I had this on Episode 2 without this mod, and it went away after I played it over again.

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/3965/ep2outland010004dq5.jpg
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/2527/ep2outland010005re3.jpg

Might I mention my Episode 2 game is 2% fragmented, and defragged using Steam tool, which reduced it back to 1%. Don't know if that has anything to do with it =/

Nonetheless, I'm always crashing after Alyx's accident in the first level. Like right after the blackout and right as the Antlion comes towards her. Maybe it's the changing of Alyx variation from "BEFORE" to "AFTER". Then again, I kept those 2 variations consistent, so it wouldn't have to change frown(. I'll just have to skip that level though.

Thanks.

 #80 - @Shadow Problem - Posted by: justaclone2 (Member) on 07-17-2008 at 07:23
To all experiencing the black paint or shadow problem on character models or walls. Lowering your graphical settings can solve this. Try to find cuts in areas you don't give as much a crap about (shadows, AA[never saw the solution come form AA though], motion blur, HDR).

I turned my model detail and my texture detail down to medium. I then threw the texture detail to very high or high (same thing), let it render, and since the model detail was at medium, my black walls no longer existed. I then put model detail on high, since that takes less processing than texture detail (just less in quantity), and it went to high without any in-game video corruption (no black walls).

This won't always work I'm sure. I already crashed a level when I went from one map to the next on medium settings. I then put texture detail to high and it crashed. But it's worth a shot.

It seems that once your PC is in the game, you can over time turn things on and it will be put into place on a line to be rendered instead of overflow on the userspace limit.

Mure, that problem could be because you have a 32 system. Or...do you have 32 bit Windows?

If you do, lower you texture detail settings to medium, I think that normally does it.

Just completed HL2. Apart from the Motion Blur problem I had early on, it's been crash free. I think I need to build a new rig though, as this one is getting old, and I can't max it out any further without changing to AM2+ or AM3.

@ Fake

Love the update to the GMan. Looks better with a new suit. Also like Breen, although I thought he looked better in the Suit, rather than the casual dress.
Prefered the pervious versions of Kliner.

Nice job, much improved.

 #93 - Posted by: justaclone2 (Member) on 07-18-2008 at 12:30
Yeah, you should be able to run it Gvaz. Technically, you can run it. Always be prepared to enter a mod with trouble though, it is just how mods are approached most of the time. Though, I would expect less bug trouble with your specs (maybe only bug mistakes Fake actually missed instead of 32 bit problems).

Let me put it this way, if that rig can run Episode Two maxed out at a resolution above 1280x1024 (and I'm sure it can), no AA, 16x AF, and all that other stuff, then you can run this. The mod still runs on the Source engine, so if my "beefy" Visiontek Radeon HD 2600 Pro 512 AGP (yeah, AGP) card with an AMD 64 3200 processor and 2 GB of RAM can run this mod like that at 1440x900 (and it CAN, cause I'm playing it already) with understandable 32 bit crashes, then yeah, nothing to worry about for you.

Fake, awesome job. You continue to stabilize the mod's ability to run well even though it is supposed to be harder to run. Either that, or I've got some super-liquid nitrogen in my PC that I don't know about. (okay, not super-liquid nitrogen, but you know what I mean)

 #94 - FF CM Guide... - Posted by: justaclone2 (Member) on 07-18-2008 at 12:52
Sorry for the double post everyone. But I'm writing up a guide for HL2 files (if Fake and the staff will allow it to be submitted). It's going to be a guide for anyone and everyone who wants to know whether or not they can run the mod, and how well it can be run.

The guide will also be used to help explain certain errors for people (since not all errors can be fixed, like the 32-bit crash).

I don't know everything. Mainly, I know how to run the mod correctly and how well to run the games. The thing I know the least is the code and messages. If you know of any errors or problems that come as a result of under-powered hardware, or software interruptions, please contact me and let me know.

Click on my username to send me a message. And thanks.

Hope you allow this Fake, and HL2Files staff. I've never uploaded a file before, but this should just be a word document.

 #95 - okay - Posted by: Gvaz (Member) on 07-18-2008 at 14:21
Thanks for the tip, There was one space at the end of Ep 1 (the place where you fall into with all the water) that absolutely killed my fps (1920x1200, every single setting in game maxed out) to 10-20fps but other than that I frequently get 45-60fps in Ep 1. I haven't started Ep 2 just yet.

I'd upgrade the cpu but I'm still on a 939 socket frown

 #96 - Posted by: justaclone2 (Member) on 07-18-2008 at 14:46
Episode Two (without Fake's mod) runs better than Episode One since it is a more recent upgrade of the Source engine by Valve. I think the mod will run better than Episode Two. Though in the beta, I encountered a couple maps in a row in Episode Two in which I had to throw down settings and leave them down. But that was the beta, and I quit that early...and I have a 32-bit system.

Certain graphical effects affect video cards. For me, particle systems like clouds or dust hamper my performance by a lot. For you, it looks like water. But the Source engine's particle system doesn't really affect me by much.

Awesome mod..but keeps crashing on level load for me =(

Running XP Pro SP3 32-bit, and I know it is meant to have issues..but if i have the RAM, what's the problem?

Can anyone help me out? Any console commands I can play with? Tried changing mem_max_heapsize from 512 to 1024 but it didn't seem to have any affect.

I really want to play this..especially since I spent the whole of last night downloading and setting this up!

What is the boot.ini switch he's talking about?

#99 - Posted by: Gvaz (Member) on 07-18-2008 at 19:44
i dont remember smoke or dust or things like that lowering the frame rate, perhaps it's my cpu (even though it's dual core) that gave me such a low fps at that time

#100 - Posted by: Gvaz (Member) on 07-18-2008 at 19:53
fLaMePrO, 32 bit cannot address, or simply; see, more than 3-3.5gb of total system memory. 64 bit does not have such a limitation

#101 - Posted by: fLaMePrO (Member) on 07-18-2008 at 19:59

#104 - Possible Memory Leak in Ep1 - Posted by: FreemanLockedUp (Member) on 07-19-2008 at 06:57
I've just completed Episode 1, and I'm really impressed by the progress.
There is however a bug that pops up now and then. After a while of playing, I get a freeze, and at the same time a mouse pointer flashes up, meaning it's just crashed to the desktop without ending the game. The problem doesn't re-occur again for a while longer, and nothing specific triggers the crash.

Apart from this, it's awesome. I love the new music (I'm guessing it's from the up coming 'The Dark Knight'). Just one minor note on the new Jigglebone - Alyx's assets bounce around wildly on the train ride. I noticed Mossmons did the same during the left ride in HL2, during Black Mesa East.

 #105 - @ Fakefactory - Posted by: joz90 (Member) on 07-19-2008 at 07:11
playing through HL2 again i have noticed some issues that are still present from CM7, you may have mentioned or not, if so im sorry.

whenever i go in water, when i look up the water of the surface (for some reason) is a still image of my view as i went in the water(??)

also there is a turret that i can't take control of, its the one during the canals and you have to smash a gate open, then an alarm goes off and combine come for you.

thats all i have encountered so far, they are only minor problems, and its still a great mod, but if you could find a way to fix it, all the better.

also, just one more thing. Is this "suprise" going to come in as an update or as a whole new cinematic mod? just would like to know, il probably get it either way smile

 #106 - Posted by: justaclone2 (Member) on 07-19-2008 at 07:43
Flamepro,

Userspace limitations, or the boot.ini make the game crash. Even with 3 GB I think it doesn't even run as it should.

A good way to avoid these crashes is to throw your settings down to medium before each map load (texture detail and model detail settings I mean). Then throw them back up. Sometimes you have to put them to high in different orders.

And Gvaz, it's just my videocard that reacts slowly to dust and cloud particles. It just always does. That's what I meant, your card might react slowly to water more than anything.

That was fantastic.

Though I seriously need a new rig as the framerate frequently dropped below 10fps.

The new reccomended spec sould be

Win XP/Vista 64bit
AM2+/AM3 2.8GHz or Faster
8GB RAM (DDR 800 or Faster)
GeForce 8800 or Better.

the one where you're on the bridge, you can see the water missing square chunks on the horizon. I don't know how to fix this or if it is even fixable. It- it could just be what happens when your transfer EP2 water into HL2 made maps.

 #110 - Posted by: justaclone2 (Member) on 07-19-2008 at 12:19
Uh...FreemanLockedUp

I don't think DDR 800 exists...and I don't know of a motherboard that handles 8 GB of RAM (though my knowledge of motherboards is not as advanced as others)

And you shouldn't be spending that much to run this game well.

And if you REALLY want the framerate, forget GeForce 8800s, get a GeForce 280 (not in MB). It's PC Gamer's highest and fastest reviewed video card EVER.

It's something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048+1305520548+1069633099+4021+106792634&name=GeForce+GTX+200+Series

I don't know which one is best.

 #111 - @ FreemanLockedUp - Posted by: 2Cold_Scorpio (Member) on 07-19-2008 at 16:17
I dunno how you're getting such low FPS; my rig isn't as stout as what you think the requirements are, and I get a steady 55+ FPS with a very limited number of times it drops below (As of playing through most of Water Hazard, I've yet to see less than 45). Nor have I seen a single crash (and I'm using a 32-bit OS)

My spacs are:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 overclocked to 3.4GHz
Vid Card: GeForce 8800GT Superclocked (512MB)
RAM: 3.5 GBs 800MHz DDR2 RAM
OS: Windows XP Pro 32-bit (using the /3GB switch boot tweak)

And for my settings, I have all settings set to the highest except AA (which is at CS8xAA). Yes, I'm running highest texture settings, full 16xAF, the whole shebang, and am doing it at 1680x1050 w/ VSync on.

Its possible my FPS could drop more later in the game (and I expect to have to turn down a couple of things, mainly AA for Ep. 2; I had to do it with vanilla Ep. 2 (using 4xAA to maintain FPS).

I know my rig is pretty good, but it is by no means great, and I run this mod fine. CM8 actually seems more stable than CM6 or CM7 so far, actually (this is important, considering I'm running 32-bit Windows; even with the /3GB switch, CM6 and CM7 did experience the occasional crash, but CM8 hasn't so far). Maybe I'm just lucky? ^_^

Anyways, my hat is off to you, FakeFactory; you've outdone yourself this time, and I can't wait to see this surprise you spoke of. big grin Two Thumbs Up!

I have the following Rig:

WinXP64
AMD AM2 6000 DC (3GHz)
4GB DDR2 800
GeForce 8600GT with 512MB

I'm also running the game at 1680x1050 with everything maxed out, except for AA which is set to 4x and AF set to 2x.
I used these settings for the beta, and it ran very well indeed, but the Final runs well during non combat areas or flashlight areas.

As my Mobo doesn't seem to like the GeForce 9 range (because of the PCI 2.0 standard), I'll have to upgrade to the EVGA 8800GTX (Water cooled) with 768MB.

Great work as always ... Graphics and work are the best!

 #115 - @FreemanLockedUp - Posted by: 2Cold_Scorpio (Member) on 07-20-2008 at 07:17
AFAIK, the 9-series should run fine on non-PCI-E 2.0 slots (after all, the 8800GT is a PCI-E 2.0 card, too); PCI-E 2.0 was meant to be backwards compatible. I don't see any issues unless your particular mobo is strange. ^_^ The only thing is, since you (or I, for that matter, as my mobo is an Abit IP-35 Pro, and doesn't have PCI-E 2.0 either) don't have actual PCI-E 2.0 slots, the cards just aren't sending data as fast (as in, the bandwidth avenues are smaller with PCI-E 1.1). But PCI-E 2.0 cards should still work just fine...you're already using one, in fact. Unless nVidia did something really different with the 9-series and later that I don't know about. wink

#116 - Posted by: Gvaz (Member) on 07-20-2008 at 08:37
I have an asrock 939sli32-esata2, and it's perfectly fine with my 8800gts (the g92 revision)

but yeah if you're going for a new pc, go ATI, it's alot better in some instances than the 2xx series by nvidia, and it's alot better than the 8800gts/gtx.

also there is ddr800 and ddr1066 ram, but not all boards support 1066 and most boards dont support 8gb of ram unless you're paying for a very expensive one $200 or more

go for an e8500, 4gb of ddr2 800 ram, ATI 4850 w/512MB (it's comparable and better than a 9800gtx and cheaper than the 260/280 which dont give enough boost to justify the $150+ difference)

#117 - previous models from character pimper - Posted by: saddat (Member) on 07-20-2008 at 08:56
seriously , guys. I downloaded CM 6-8 and tried to make a character pimper repository with all models from these CMs.
Firstly, i find a lot of character screenshots which are not in my repository folders (e.g. nudes, the one with the towl on the head ...)
Secondly, after copying alot of these models are not accepted by hl2. After "installing" a new character the previous characters shows up Instead.
So whats the deal with the character pimper. What am i missing?

I did buy a 9600, but when Windows booted up, I kept losing the display once I got to the desktop. Tried it in a friends rig, and it killed it. Finally, my brother tried it in his new AM2+, and all is well, so I don't think PCI-E 2.0 is fully backward compatible - unless Gainward have done something funny. Oh Well, at least I can upgrade the Mobo without having to by a new CPU (supposedly). Then at least I can upgrade to a better Graphics card, and then go from there.

While you're waiting to Alyx to show up, and look around on stuff, then Eli says something about it, if you go and look at something else he just starts talking at the same time without stoping.

 #128 - HL2 bug report - Posted by: Nahka (Member) on 07-21-2008 at 09:37
I just finished HL2 and it was quite smooth, only couple of places where fps dropped but nothing too disturbing. here's the bugs I found. old bugs:
-can't use a mounted gun in water hazard, the place where you have smash the gate open
-weird reflections under water in water hazard
new bugs:
-mossmans tits bounce in elevator, and some times alyx's too. nothing disturbing, just hilarious
-one female rebel don't have shadow when using flashlight, I can see her guns shadow on the wall though

that's all I think, plus the one where breen can't stand. other things:
-maybe a bit too strong phong on some citizens skin
-that dead fat guy in ravenholm is still there
-burned corpses, fast zombies and poison zombies need HD-models

the mod looks beautiful, brightness and colors fit very well. I like the new look of Breen and Kleiner, Kleiner looked a bit weird at start but after I got used to him, he started to look ok. the new citizens are cool too. I hope there will be some kind of update patches

#129 - Posted by: FreemanLockedUp (Member) on 07-21-2008 at 09:58
I agree with Nahka that everything seems to work well, with just the odd random glitch. I think most of my trouble is a slow system, but the current economy is making life a bit tight for cash, so I'll have to make do for a while.

I too noticed Breen could not stand at the start (think this problem was present in CM7 too).

@Fake
I noticed in Ep2 when Alyx sat up on the table (just after the Vorts did their magic), the Jigglebone was not doing much to animate Alyx's tits or jacket. Was it being a scripted bit that broke the Jigglebone. Just thinking if it could be turned on and off, it might be best to turn off when in lifts and during the train ride at the end of Ep1, as they periodically bounce wildly.

I'm really liking the new Alyx look with the push up bra. Now preferring it over the Valve style.big grin

For some reason this version works better for me than CM7 did, however I miss the nude models. I saw that one of the moderators or whatever said you aren't allowed to post them here but what about somewhere else?

The new jigglebone is great, by the way, you should add more outfits.

 #148 - @ 16FireAway16 - Posted by: JoWannes (Member) on 07-27-2008 at 02:44
When you only open the first file, and you get errors, your archiver will tell you in wich file there are errors, not?
There's no other solution than download that file again... Sorry.
That's the reason why FF split up the archive in 5 euh, 'small' files...
If you have no idea wich file is corrupt, then check the filesize of your files. File 1, 2, 3 and 4 must be 1.46Gb...
(I had 1 corrupt file too, a redownload was the only solution)

Difference between intact and not intact - part way through Ep2 she is attacked by an antlion and needs to be healed by a Vort - i recall afterwards there is 2 holes on the back of her jacket.

Hello,

I've been trying to install the latest of fakefactory's amazing mod, but seem to be running into some extracting errors. I open up the first archive, and unrar it. It extracts properly, but I get the following errors:

! C:UsersReApErMaNDownloadscm8final.part1.rar: CRC failed in CM8FINALInstallerfilesCharacter Pimper.zip. The file is corrupt
! C:UsersReApErMaNDownloadscm8final.part1.rar: Packed data CRC failed in CM8FINALInstallerfilesep2.zip. The volume is corrupt
! C:UsersReApErMaNDownloadscm8final.part2.rar: CRC failed in CM8FINALInstallerfilesep2.zip. The file is corrupt
! C:UsersReApErMaNDownloadscm8final.part2.rar: CRC failed in CM8FINALInstallerfilesepisodic.zip. The file is corrupt
! C:UsersReApErMaNDownloadscm8final.part3.rar: CRC failed in CM8FINALInstallerfileshl2.zip. The file is corrupt

I read previous posts, and understand that I need to re-download the corrupt files, which I am doing right now. Still, I was curious if any of these errors meant anything else--like what is the difference between the file being corrupt and the volume being corrupt?

Thanks for everyones' time.

 #161 - crashes.. - Posted by: 16FireAway16 (Member) on 08-07-2008 at 14:05
get zero crashes during gameplay, it only crashes during a loading. and somehow, in ep1, after the part where you go down with the huge elevator wich get's destroyed, the loading of the map makes me crash. but i can only go to the next map if i pud my texture too medium. and if i get past the loading and turn the texture up again to very high, then it stll crashes. odd.. i can play everywhere on full but not there.

#162 - Runs for About a Minute, Then Has Issues - Posted by: VoyagerRules (Member) on 08-08-2008 at 18:48
Hey FakeFactory, I know you probably have your hands full as it is, but everytime I install the mod and start Half Life 2, it runs fine for about a couple minutes, but then it kicks me out of the game, and Windows tells me I'm out of memory for the program. I don't know if it's my specs, or what, but it's giving me a problem. The unmodded game works without a hitch even with the graphics set on high. I've tried lowering the graphics for the mod but still with no success.

Specs:
Intel Pentium D 2.8/2.7 GHz
3 Gigabytes of RAM
Windows Vista Ultimate x64
VisionTek ATI 4850 (w/512 MB VRAM)
Dynex 5.1 Surround (currently using S/PDIF)

#163 - Used to love this mod... - Posted by: Browncoat1984 (Member) on 08-08-2008 at 20:27
But now it makes me sad. I was so much looking forward to playing the new version and running through episode 2 with the high-res treatment...and I find out that there's an insane 3gb ram requirement, which means that it also requires vista since to the best of my knowledge XP doesn't support 2 gb of ram. I don't have 3 gb ram in my system, I have two and up until now that has been plenty...and even if I wanted to install Vista I couldn't since I don't have it.

I was able to play it for about 5 minutes before I started getting crashes...and when I played it it played perfectly fine at 1680 X 1050 res. Any hopes of a 2 gb version for those of us who aren't fortunate enough to have 3 gb or Vista? If not, then it looks like I won't be playing any future versions of this mod frown.

You need HL2 and both Ep1 and Ep2 to run this.

Fake is currently working on a 32bit version - so stop *****ing, or he might not bother.

This mod is to enhance the gaming experience, and is NOT costing you anything (except a costly phone bill for those of you still using dial-up).

Heres a quote from a previous release:

I've learned my lession and so let me say these very clear words: This mod is the result of my own very personal taste. If you don't like the mod, delete it. But please ... STFU ... and let other people decide for themself.

 #175 - EP1 ending slow - Posted by: 5arge (Member) on 08-13-2008 at 09:47
I experienced something interesting last night. At the end of ep1, right after the "signal" begins to be sent from the citadel, the game slows down to a crawl. At first I thought it may just be my system, but I doubted that was the case. After turning the resolution (800x600), shader detail, model detail, texture detail, antialiasing, and anamorphic something down to medium/low I experienced the very same issue. It wasn't even running faster than with all graphics settings maxed. Is this happening for anyone else?

(machine specs: XP 64, 4GB ram, Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz, EVGA 8800GTS 512 (g92))

I believe that I have, unless I've gone crazy. Sorry for posting this in this forum btw (being that I have installed it). I suppose that I managed to do something wrong with the install, but I don't see how; I left everything with the default install locations/settings. I guess I will try to re-install it and try the ending again, assuming of course that I don't have to replay all of ep1 for the update to apply.

 #178 - @ #177 - Posted by: FreemanLockedUp (Member) on 08-14-2008 at 09:33
You could try saving and reloading before the train ride. I have found some errors poped up in the beta, such as broken scripts, which were reolved after a reload.

can anyone please help? is it my settings? its all on high, with a resolution of 1680X1050 (the highest my monitor will go) with Antialiasing 2X

 #182 - mat_queue_mode "2" - Posted by: Draut_HEV_ (Member) on 08-16-2008 at 08:41
Hi Fakefactory!

Very nice, very nice.... better & better. Rock

But it runs a bit slow, due to source engine's outdated material handle.
In the Orange Box engine, there is a lot of multi-core optimization commands, like:
mat_queue_mode
cl_threaded_bone_setup
cl_interp_threadmodeticks
cl_threaded_client_leaf_system
r_threaded_client_shadow_manager
r_threaded_particles
r_threaded_renderables
r_queued_decals
r_queued_post_processing
mp_usehwmmodels
mp_usehwmvcds

and so.
I get 60 fps in a scene (indifferent), and when i type to console "mat_queue_mode "2"", then i get 110 fps. That's a lot of frames. But this also causes many crashes (most of errors are buffer overloads). Can you do something? I think, these options are really important and useful for many users.

I've got 4 gigs of ram (using the 4gig memory fix for vista 32). The "my computer" properties shows all 4 gigs being seen.

I get these errors when I try to load up a brand new game of HL2 EP0.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/fastredponycar/Half-Life%202/ff8error.jpg

I've installed the 8.2 patch also with no luck.

Other hardware

E8400 cpu
8800 Ultra OC
etc.

frown

Task manager's performance tab shows only 3325mb physical total memory and 2298 cached and 39 mb free???? Is there something wrong here?

#184 - Posted by: Silvermoon (Member) on 08-17-2008 at 19:10
A 32 bit OS can't use more than ~3.2 Go of ram. Thats the reason why its better to use a 64bit OS for this mod.

#186 - Runtime Error - Posted by: Molokk (Member) on 08-19-2008 at 15:48
Hi guys,

I just finished installing this on Windows XP SP3 32-Bit, and regular Half-Life 2 starts without problems. I can play until I reach the very first loading point after I meet Barney for the first time. As soon as that part starts loading then the game crashes to the Desktop with a Runtime Error, anyone else experienced it?

My system is as follows:

Intel C2D E8400
Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6
OCZ Reaper HPC PC2-6400 4GB
ASUS EN8800GTS 640MB
Creative SB X-Fi XtremeMusic

So I have a total of 3.2GB in Windows (32-Bit), and my GPU has 640MB already. I've set the heapsize to 512MB. As I said the game launches without problems and I can play until that first loading part, and then when it loads I get that Runtime Error.

I already have downloaded and installed CMV6, must I download all these file(s) for CMV8 or is there an update from CMV6?

 #188 - /3GB Switch - Posted by: Molokk (Member) on 08-20-2008 at 18:30
Alright I tried the /3GB Switch and it helps A LOT for stability, definitely.

After applying the /3GB Switch I still get a Runetime Error but now they are VERY rare, they happened each time I switched from one level to another before, but now it's occurring very rarely, I'm happy about this because now I can play Half-Life 2 and I finally was able to reach the level right after we meet Barney for the first time.

Then my first Runetime Error happened only after loading a level during the time when the first Combine Helicopter attacks you, so it took a good hour or so before I had the first crash. So I suggest to anyone running Windows XP 32-Bit to apply the /3GB Switch and then it will play MUCH better. It's still not 100% stable, but at least it GREATLY helps believe me.

#189 - More sexy suits/outfits for Alyx - Posted by: Molokk (Member) on 08-21-2008 at 00:43
I wanted to know, FakeFactory, if you're planning to include more sexy clothing/suits for the Valve-style Alyx model that you included in patch 8.2? I would really like it. And perhaps as an extra maybe more science-fiction type suits like the black one for the Adriana Lima-based model or maybe more military type stuff with camouflage motifs.

Also a partially naked or completely naked model would be appreciated smile

If all of that could be available from the Character Pimper it would be awesome I think.

 #190 - @ #189 - Posted by: FreemanLockedUp (Member) on 08-21-2008 at 12:04
Don't forget that Fake is limited by the rules here reguarding such content, but yes it would be nice to see some extra skins available.

#191 - Posted by: kingtiger (Member) on 08-23-2008 at 10:58
This latest MOD depicts Alyx exactly how a woman would look if she's in a long winded war. Even though I like the hotter looking Alyx better, version 8 keeps it realistic.

I wonder if Fake is going to go a step further and come out with new maps instead of the ones used by the original Half Life 2 games.

 #193 - Problem with expressions/lipsynching - Posted by: Phoenixmage9000 (Member) on 08-25-2008 at 00:48
Hey there. The mod looks great, especially on full settings. Wish I could run it on full all the time, but I'm on 32-bit, so it's crashes galore if I do that.

Anyway, I'm having another problem (besides the crashes caused by 32-bit on high settings). About half of the characters I encounter do not have animated faces. So, their lips don't move when they talk, they don't move their eyebrows, etc. Just completely blank expressions. Some do work fine, however. Anyone have a solution?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

A little help anyone?

#195 - Posted by: IoUGhost (Member) on 08-27-2008 at 19:47
Ah! I figured it out, the download changed file names, corrupting my files. I fixed it though.

I feel dumb... lol

#196 - Posted by: Tikkii (Member) on 08-29-2008 at 02:00
Do I need to download the other CM8 files e.g. 2/5 3/5 etc? Its just that the descriptions seem to be the same for those. Do they have new content?

 #197 - @Tikkii - Posted by: Nahka (Member) on 08-29-2008 at 04:00
yes, you have to download all 5 packs to get it to work. this mod is so huge that Fake had to split it up to 5 pieces for better downloading

#198 - Posted by: Tikkii (Member) on 08-29-2008 at 11:30
Damnit yea, just found that out
Well, I guess i wont be playing this for a while then. hope its worth it.

which folder in the 'materials/models' folder holds 'Mossmon', 'Eli' and 'Breen' there are 'FF mossmon' but thats the fake factory one isn't it? wheres the originals of each of those characters, they are not there. There is HB 'name' filders but i don't know what that is, please help me!

also, i am still having that blurry textures issue, when i look at textures from teh side, and the further away the blurrier, it really makes them look bad, and it REALLY looks bad in outdoor sections. whats up with that? how do i fix this?

cheers.

 #202 - @joz90 - Posted by: Nahka (Member) on 09-02-2008 at 03:01
if you want to find original textures, they are in "source materials.gcf" that can be found in your steamapps-folder. you need GCFScape to extract them

 #203 - Posted by: joz90 (Member) on 09-02-2008 at 11:48
i need to find the location of them in the 'FAKEFACTORY_CM8' folder in my 'SourceMods' folder.

 #204 - @joz90 - Posted by: Nahka (Member) on 09-03-2008 at 05:24
sorry, there are not any folders named as Eli, Mossman or Breen. Fake has not edited the original maincharacters models or materials, so thay are not included. the HB-folders are for the HD citizens. if you wish to edit the maincharacters materials, you need to do as I said in my previous post

 #205 - Runtime C++ - Posted by: McBaal (Member) on 09-03-2008 at 05:50
Just for all those who got the Runtimeerror crashes. There is nothing you can do. It is not because of your hard- or software or any drivers or DX. It´s a failure within the programcode. C++ tries to fix a codeintern failure without success, so the game crashes. There may be some triggers, provocating those errors. For example backgroundproblems as Winamp. But they are not the reason for itself. As is said it´s a codingerror within the used C++ code of CM8, i think because of the new used Orangeboxengine. I repeat: There is absolutely nothing you can do, except searching and rewriting the CM8 coding. I hope Fakefactory can and will fix this with a patch or in a next version. We can just hope and wait frown

 #206 - @ Nahka - Posted by: joz90 (Member) on 09-03-2008 at 14:24
ah so their models run through the official valve folders, would that be correct? if so, thanks, this helps (BTW that sounds a bit sarcastic, just to say, its not! lol)

 #207 - BTW - Posted by: joz90 (Member) on 09-03-2008 at 14:27
could you tell me how i use this GCFScape please? sorry im a bit of a noob with this sort of stuff. Usually i just copy content of a new folder into the old, and that usually works, but im not sure how to do it using GCFScape.

 #208 - @joz90 - Posted by: Nahka (Member) on 09-04-2008 at 05:18
no problem. start GCFScape, clikc "open", find a pack named as "source materials" and open it. now there should be two folders, hl2 and reslists. open hl2, then materials and then models. the folder you are looking for can be found there named as Eli, Mossman etc. choose folders or files you want to edit, right click them and choose "extract". find place to extract them and you are done, now you can edit them. hope this helps

 #209 - huge fan - Posted by: ackattack1 (Member) on 09-04-2008 at 17:55
hey fake, just wanted to tell you that I am a huge fan. I actually signed up for an account for the sole purpose of telling you that your work is truly amazing. I was a huge fan of the past CM mods and this one looks to be the best. Small problem though... I have had no trouble at all running your previous CM's on max on 32bit windows xp with only 2 gigs or ram. This version doesn't last two seconds without lag or the program dropping out. I was wondering if the 32bit version is coming soon. Maybe an estimation? Even a sooner or later will do!

 #210 - XP 32-Bit - Posted by: Molokk (Member) on 09-04-2008 at 19:06
As I wrote in a previous replay, if anyone is running Windows XP 32-Bit they should use the 3GB switch to play this mod to avoid crashes. I myself am running XP SP3 32-Bit with 4GB of RAM (of course Windows only recognize 3.25GB). But it doesn't mean anything really. This mod uses a LOT of virtual address space, and only 64-Bit OS'es can deal with this mod's address space requests without a problem, unless you use the 3GB switch in a 32-Bit environment.

What the 3GB switch does is simply to add one more GB of address space for user-applications and it removes 1GB for OS-functions. Normally without the switch Windows keeps 2GB for itself and 2GB for user-applications (remember we're NOT talking about the physical RAM that we install on the motherboard here, it's something somehow different). But be AWARE everyone that using the 3GB switch MAY give some problems in other games (such as Team Fortress 2 for example, which causes the famous "Failed to Lock Vertex Buffer" error).

The best way to create the 3GB switch is to leave the current first line of the BOOT.INI intact, and then just adding a new line with a 3GB switch to it. Then if it is done properly what happens when you reboot is that Windows will give you a choice between two versions, the "regular" one, and the "3GB switch" one.

Here for example, my BOOT.INI looks like this WITHOUT the 3GB switch:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP home edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

And here is how it looks when I ADD a new boot line WITH the 3GB switch to it:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP home edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP home edition 3GB" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /3GB

It's really not more complicated than this.

That way, each time you boot up, you have two choices, and you can select the 3GB one whenever you want to play this mod. And then you reboot and you select the regular one each time you want to do other activities on your system. So if something wrong ever happens under the 3GB switch session then all you have to do is just reboot and select the regular one, no need to reformat or reboot in safe mode or anything like that.

This is the ONLY way for this mod to work best under a 32-Bit Windows, there's NO other methods until FakeFactory works on a newer version that is compatible with 32-Bit OS'es at 100%, because right now it's not entirely compatible, it runs, yes, but it will eventually crash unless the 3GB switch is on, but then again the 3GB switch still don't work at 100% simply because this mod requires too much address space for 32-Bit OS, it's that simple. But as I said the 3GB switch will definitely help just like FakeFactory mentioned in the Readme.

do those errors pop up while installing or while extracting? many people has had corrupted files and they got errors while extracting. you have to redownload the corrupted parts and then try again

I'm running the 3 gb switch on xp 32 bit and I can't seem to get it to play right. I am playing HL2, and managed to get to pretty close to the end through somewhat numerous bugs. I am now at the strider battle after you come out of the nexus, and it gets so many bugs that I really can't play it anymore.

Throughout the game, I have had:
strange shadows, tend to pop up all of a sudden and it's dark toward the middle of the texture and lighter on the edges.
strange fps slowdowns out of nowhere, tends to go away if I look in another direction, but can be when looking at a wall. Seems to depend on direction, not what it is you can see.
rainbow textures all of a sudden

All of these issues strangely enough could be fixed just by quicksaving then immediately quickloading.
I also got a few instances where the game locked up, I would see only sky and could not turn or move. Had to ctr-alt-del and sometimes hit the reset button to mend.

Now I get those issues within seconds of playing, on that level. The weird sky error seems to be the most prevalent of them all.

My pc:
E8400 @3.33
Patriot 2x2 gb 1066 mhz ram
Gigabyte EP35-DS3L (F6a bios)
HD4870 @ 800/4000
PCP&C Silencer 610
Samsung 2253bw 1680x1050

I would really like to finish this game, but right now, it really isn't a game, just a heap of frustration.

And also, the skybox should be a larger texture, I can see squares of color when I use the zoom on it.

I've copied Valyx model from CM7 into the repositories and I've also copied the materials for VALYX too. But I am unable to get the jiggle bones part working. I'm guessing the CM7 models are the same as CM8 (just different heads).

Can someone help here?

At #225 (USS Dreadnaught), Just copy the SourceMods/FakeFactory_CM/materials/models (as well as the episodes too) and the repository from the Character Pimper for the chosen models. Note, as these models are a different mesh, there might be some pink textures in places.

 #227 - @FreemanLockedUp - Posted by: Nahka (Member) on 11-02-2008 at 07:05
The jigglebones are part of the model and CM7 models don't have them. Unless someone adds jigglebones in it, you won't get them working

I have a very simple (and maybe stupid) question: how to run it? I've installed it, then run Steam, what now? Tried to run game but main menu looks like the same, and I have strong suspicion that it "does not know" about mod.

My Steam is empty, I never had a need in it before and just got it recently for Left 4 Dead and did nothing with it. HL2 is not activated through it as well.

Dudes-why you all want to optimize FFCM on 32?
if you have a system that gives nice fps in FFCM you can upgrade do WinXP 64Bit-you will have a classic XP,but 64-bits! no problems or bugs like in Vista.
this is advice)))

BTW-not all problems can be solved in 32 system. My machine with 8gb ram often gives me bsod because 32 dont see all of 8 gb but want to use it.after installing 64-no problems.and 64-bit systems make a better chance to authors of this mod to bake it better and greater! imho

I don't understand why the 'requirements' you seem to think this needs, but I only have 2GIG of RAM, a crappy 8500GT (lower end) graphics card and a Q6600 Quad core - but this mod runs fine. Only problem is it often crashes when it loads between 'areas'. And all I have to do is just lower the GFX and it loads fine.

#238 - Posted by: GFMan (Member) on 12-26-2008 at 09:35
A full potential of this mod are uncovering in 64-bits imho

I don't understand this. Does this cover the old versions as well? For example does it contain 7.0 version models. And secondly, does this include original HL2 modification? Thanx for answer if there will be any(it is not common to got an answer of any type on this forum as far as I noticed :-))

 #240 - WTF - Posted by: draco_z (Member) on 01-27-2009 at 23:53
Ever since I downloaded this mod, any fullscreen Steam Game I play randomly crashes (The Monitor goes black with a "No Input" message, and I have to turn off my computer). My monitor is connected to my Graphics card, so I assume the Card is crashing. I've updated my drivers, but my card seems to be worn out or something, and I have good reason to believe the reason is this Mod. Is there any way to fix it??

#241 - What did the Vortigaunts do with her clothes? - Posted by: itsgus (Member) on 03-07-2009 at 23:09
Did anyone else notice that Alyx is almost completely nude during the part where the Vortigaunts are healing her?

I was using the Adriana Lima skin at the time. She also had on tow different shoes that she didn't have on before.

I'm quite surprised to not see anyone else talking about this or asking how to access it.

#242 - Just Music - Posted by: Tikkii (Member) on 03-29-2009 at 04:20
Hey, does anyone know if it's possible to just have the new music/soundtrack installed? I have 32bit and unfortunately the mod just doesn't work frown But I'd love to replay it with the music. Anyone?
